Behavioral Health Helpline (BHHL)

The Behavioral Health Helpline connects individuals and families to the full range of treatment services for mental health and substance use offered in Massachusetts, including outpatient, urgent, and immediate crisis care. The Helpline is free and available to all Massachusetts residents, even if you do not have insurance.  

The Helpline is available in more than 200 languages and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. When you reach out to the Helpline, you’ll speak with a Resource & Referral Specialist. The Resource & Referral Specialist can provide you with: 

  • Information about behavioral health services 
  • Resources for behavioral health and other needs 
  • Clinical triage and assessment 
  • Connection to emergent, urgent, and routine mental health and substance use treatment 
  • Warm handoff to your local Community Behavioral Health Centers (CBHCs)

After your initial contact with the Helpline, a Resource/Referral Specialist will follow up to ensure you did connect with services.

Community Behavioral Health Centers (CBHCs)

Community Behavioral Health Centers are regional centers that offer emergent, urgent, and routine treatment for mental health and substance use conditions.

This includes: 

  • In-person and telehealth services with evening and weekend availability 
  • Clinical and peer support 
  • Individual, family, and group therapy 
  • Medication-prescribing services and management 
  • Care coordination, treatment planning, and referrals to other services 
  • Same-day evaluation and access to treatment with timely follow-up appointments 
  • Behavioral health urgent care 
  • Youth and adult mobile crisis intervention and community crisis stabilization

The Massachusetts Behavioral Health Access (MABHA) website helps both providers and individuals locate openings in mental health and substance use disorder services. Below are descriptions of each program. The link above is where you can find places in your area to find an opening. 

  • SOAP is also known as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
  • SOAP is a short-term, intensive day and/or evening substance use disorder treatment service. It is for individuals who do not need 24-hour care.
  • Individuals get help with withdrawal management. Services include case management, education, and counseling.
  • Individuals can stay in the community, work, or school. They can continue being part of their family life while getting treatment.
  • SOAP is available for adolescents and adults.

  • CSS is an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization that occurs in a community setting instead of in a hospital.
  • CCS is a 24-hour program staffed by mental health professionals.
  • CCS provides 24-hour on-site nursing coverage.
  • CCS services are for people aged 18 and older. A typical length of stay is 3 to 5 days.
  • Services are offered 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

  • Individuals with opioid use disorder have their medication given to them and monitored.
  • Common medications are methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, and other U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications.
  • Individuals can receive counseling, education, and vocational services as needed.
  • MOUD may be provided in an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP), Office-Based Addiction Treatment Program (OBAT), primary care, or outpatient behavioral practice.
  • OTP is available on a short-term (withdrawal management) or long-term (maintenance) basis.
  • MOUD supports recovery from substance use disorders.
  • Treatment includes behavioral therapy and medications.
