Behavioral Health – Essex County Outreach

Essex County Outreach works to reduce the impact of the most common mental health and substance use disorders on America’s communities. We recognize that they often overlap in co-occurring (dual-diagnosis) events. However, many people, formally diagnosed or not, have treatable mental health needs that may not be intertwined with substance use disorder at all. Mental health affects people from all walks of life and many people suffer in silence due to stigma, shame, embarrassment, fear of job loss or what others may think of asking for help. Mental disorders involve changes in mood, thinking, and/or behavior and result in varying degrees of impairment to normal functioning in daily life and relationships.

The Massachusetts Behavioral Health Access (MABHA) website helps both providers and individuals locate openings in mental health and substance use disorder services. Below are descriptions of each program. The link above is where you can find places in your area to find an opening.

SOAP is also known as Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
SOAP is a short-term, intensive day and/or evening substance use disorder treatment service. It is for individuals who do not need 24-hour care.
Individuals get help with withdrawal management. Services include case management, education, and counseling.
Individuals can stay in the community, work, or school. They can continue being part of their family life while getting treatment.
SOAP is available for adolescents and adults.

E-ATS is a 24-hour intensive treatment program that provides medically monitored withdrawal management and psychiatric treatment and stabilization.
E-ATS provides psychiatric consultation, medication review and management, nursing care, and counseling services.

is an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization that occurs in a community setting instead of in a hospital.
CCS is a 24-hour program staffed by mental health professionals.
CCS provides 24-hour on-site nursing coverage.
CCS services are for people age 18 and older. A typical length of stay is 3 to 5 days.
Services are offered 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

Individuals with opioid use disorder have their medication given to them and monitored.
Medications used are methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, or other U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications.
Individuals can receive counseling, education, and vocational services as needed.
OTP is available on a short-term (withdrawal management) or long-term (maintenance) basis.
MOUD supports recovery from substance use disorders.
Treatment includes behavioral therapy and medications.
Medications used are methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, or other U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications.
MOUD may be provided in an Opioid Treatment Program (OTP), Office-Based Addiction Treatment Program (OBAT), primary care, or outpatient behavioral practice.
