There is no right or wrong approach to an individual’s personal journey towards recovery. This journey also does not have to follow a straight line and individual’s can navigate various approaches to determine the method best for them. Abstinence-based, meaning to avoid and not engage in certain substances and behaviors, whether indefinitely or a short period of time has its pro’s and con’s. Attempting a strictly sober approach does not mean other methods cannot be tried if not successful. Conversely, some individuals might find it crucial to their well-being and sobriety to completely abstain.
Faith-based programs , or Twelve-Step Programs are rooted in the belief of a Higher Power – in whatever capacity that may be. It is based off of AA foundations from the 1930’s, which usually has spiritual references, however that may look to the individual.
