There is no right or wrong approach to recovery. One’s journey does not have to follow a straight line – usually, it does not. Individuals often try various approaches to determine the method best for them.
Abstinence-based recovery is a treatment method that involves abstaining from all substances, whether indefinitely or for a short period. Attempting a strictly sober approach does not mean other methods cannot be tried if abstinence is not successful. That said, some individuals might find it crucial to their well-being and sobriety to completely abstain from all mood- or mind-altering substances.
Faith-based residential programs and twelve-step residential programs, which are traditionally abstinence-based, involve structure living, spirituality and/or religion, as well as the belief in a higher power (HP).
